Singaporean Makes Waves In Annapolis

First Foreigner To Top The Class At United States Naval Academy In Its Long History

It is no mean feat for a young Singaporean naval officer. The USNA at Annapolis is one of the most prestigious naval college/academy (degree program) in the world.  Among its illustrous graduates include former US presidents, senators and reknown naval admirers.

Quite an excellent attainment by this young Singaporean.

Thinking Aloud: “If More and More Think and Act Like Her…”

by:   Roadside Picker

Media article extracts of Lion CITY local press.

Coffee shop Ah Peh (old folk) asked me, “What’s she saying? Good or no-good…”
A guy was quick to answer the old man, “She’s saying that she loves her country as committed as watching from the other side of the river bank…”

Just thinking aloud, if more and more people think and act this way, this could be a dam good excuse to hold on to the Lion CITY passport… while making a much better living (and opportunities) somewhere else.
There’s nothing wrong about staying away from homeland bacause of better opportunities; but it’s of no need to sing a “perfect excuse”.  People would understand the rationale why people make a move to stay away, just like those 2/3 of the students in a recent forum with minister, openly reflected their choice of moving out for better opportunities and life.
But, still no need to provide an excuse that’s coming from text-book.

(It was raining with lightning outside the coffee shop)

A guy in the coffee shop says, “I would give the article she wrote a score of 98 marks out of 100”.

From The Eyes of Young “Lions”

Pessimists Or Optimists? Or None of Both

The following media extracts of Lion CITY newspaper highlights both the aspiration and fear of younger generation of its society.

Key worrying factor of the young generation is about employment (jobs) for them.
What they should be worried about are, Sustainable Economy and Asset Pricing (by-product of high inflation and asset bubble) indeed!
They have yet to understand those complex economic issues of this era. What things would gradually add up are, values of jobs are not enough to pay off high inflationary standard of living compounded by very long period of mortgage (debt) payments. A situation of acquiring and holding on to assets (also at the same time, greater liability/debt) but with little cash and lower purchasing power to live quality life as a whole, especially at or near retirement age. To avoid the scenario, drastic economic (and maybe social as well) restructuring needs to be done to create greater balance of living standards and pure economic development.
Growth in asset prices may not equate to real economic growth and fair distribution of wealth, regardless of GDP figures suggest.

They also think that the “home turf” lacks opportunities for them to excel.
The are right (and may not be that right) to point out that overly emphasize economic development dilutes sense of pariotism.

Most telling sign  –  2/3 of them prefer to move away (of course, if they could) to other “more liveable” countries for better quality life and opportunties to excel.

Something incongruence here, according to the report, still there’s 80% of them feel confidence about a better future for Lion CITY.  (While 2/3 want to run away for better living and opportunities elsewhere…).  A typical hypocritical response to open survey?  OR simply they don’t know what they are talking… ?

Lion CITY Media – The Great And The Bad

by:  Roadsde Picker

An interesting electoral by-election (polls) has been held in the Lion CITY’s Hougang district on 26 May 2012.  The secretary general of “Hammer Party” went on to disclose about the bias nature of the mainstream media for not reporting the political event as well as opposition candidate fairly.

One of the mainstream media/press couldn’t stomach such criticism and rebuked with an article (see below).  What it says, “Don’t aim at mainstream media”; it is not fair to critisize the media as the reporters are reporting all news in fairness.

Another press article below gave a solid commentary about Lion CITY’s electoral system. It says that the ruling party should not adopt old campaining strategies for the new era. And should not “hold on to public resourcs” (such as upgrading of constituency etc.) as a scheme to gain advantage.

Anyway, the winning party in the recent electoral by-election turned up in full force to celebrate their victory. See below. “Hammers flying”…

Americans Are Needed – Lee Says

News/media Extracts

Lee Kuan Yew says, “Korea, Japan and China are having close ties in economic relations. The three nations cooperation brings about high productivity. TPP remains a broad-based framework that also includes America; more and more countries in Asia Pacific realize that participation in TPP has values. The Asia Pacific needs Americans presence, to balance the rise of an economically powerful China.” Lee was at the Asia’s Future Forum held in Tokyo, Japan.

In his speech, Lee also mentioned about whether it is in Asia Pacific or The Atlantic, USA remains a powerful nation….  US should realize its unique situation with China, which involves not only competition but also cooperation.”

Lee remains confident that China’s economy will equal if not overtake America if there’s no upheaval in its development path….  However, Lee reckons that it is not in China’s national interest to confront the US (in Asia Pacific).”

Lee also stressed that he had no better choice than to allow Singapore to open up for casino economy.  Lee went on to illustrate the serious business of managing leadership succession for Singapore government.  He says “Only those who work long period with the government would succeed in such leadership roles, because only they could fully understand our policies…”

The Way Things Work And May Not Work

by:   Roadside Picker

To emphasize specific subject matter is to make an issue clearer for targeted audience.  In the process sometimes it is effective to adopt the “Enlarging” strategy, i.e. to make that issue/matter/item sounds as if it is the most endearing ideology to be embraced or to make it look as big as the Sun.

Sometimes it works to enlarge subject matter to grab attntion; but, one has to think about the unwanted surprises that follow with enlarged “situation”… that things can work the opposite way after been enlarged as other elements are being introduced into the original equation.

For example, here are some altered situations:
(1)   Enlarged tail-pips may not necessarily increase car efficiency or horse power, but could bring in public protest.
(2)   Enlarged IPO may destroy a company’s (and the underwriting bank) reputation.
(3)   Enlarging an issue in engaged campaign without clarity of purpose may work the other way round…
